Point Dume Nature Preserve is one of our favorite spots ever! This can be a little one-mile loop with extraordinary views or a longer loop that can take you down to some stellar beaches.
One of the reasons we love this spot is because of the marine animals you can see from this trail. All year long you can spot dolphins, seals, and sea lions. From January to June, you can see whales on their migration back north swimming close to the shore with their new calves.
In the spring, the hillside is covered in poppies and other wild flowers.
Parking at the trailhead is free but can be a little tricky. There are only a half dozen spots. If you arrive in the morning in the middle of the week, there is a good chance you can find a spot. The trail can also be accessed from the Point Dume State beach, but there is a charge to park and a bit of a climb up a hill.
I do not recommend bringing a stroller on this trail due to a few steps and the sandiness of parts of the trail. There are also a few parts close to the cliff so sure sure to keep the kiddos close.
There is a great fenced lookout with benches ten minutes into the walk. Its a perfect spot to sit, admire the view, and eat some snack.
Nature Activity Suggestions: sketching, listening for sea lions, and the Point Dume Three Senses Scavenger Hunt.
