We discovered this particular nature center on a long drive.  During our stop we not only enjoyed some fantastic trails and a great picnic spot, but we also earned a Jr. Ranger Badge.

The San Elijo Nature Center has tons of interactive displays. There are a few live animal exhibits both inside and out.  Our kids were very excited about the tortoise pen outside.  A guided nature map encouraged us to explore the nearby trails.  They are flat and stroller friendly.   They also allow you to soak in the sea air and spot some fantastic birds.

After you follow the guide you receive the from the ranger, you can turn it back in and get soon in as the newest Jr. Ranger.  The whole visit was about an hour and a half.  That included eating our picnic lunch at the tables outside.

If you happen to be traveling on the 5 freeway in the San Diego area, be sure to pull over and visit the San Elijo Lagoon.
