If you are looking for a beach with small waves, The Malibu Lagoon State Beach (AKA: Surfrider Beach) is a great choice.
Not only is it a tame beach in regards to waves, but it is fantastic for any nature lover. The lagoon has a lovely nature trail with signs about the wildlife living nearby. The beach itself is also teaming with marine life in the tide pools at low tide.
